I just attended an exhibition about mummies at the Orlando Science Center and it brought up the correlation with the only two patriarchs in the Bible that were embalmed according to the Word of God: Jacob and Joseph.
Why would Joseph have his father embalmed? We may think that it was the Egyptian culture that influenced him, as he knew that he had to take his father to be buried from Egypt to the Holy Land, and did not want his body to decompose before he arrived to his resting place in Machapela, Hebron Israel… Maybe also that our Heavenly Father had another purpose for Jacob’s embalming and preserving his physical body until 2015 AC and beyond…
Genesis Chapter 50
2. And Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father; and the physicians embalmed Israel.
3. And forty days were fulfilled for him; for so are fulfilled the days of those who are embalmed; and the Egyptians mourned for him seventy days.
Jacob was embalmed in Egypt, and the time that according to the Jewish sages he was born is the year 2108. They start counting as day 1 when Adam lived…. And Jacob died in the year 2,255 living 147 years (Genesis 47:28). So if the Jews have the year 5775 today, and we subtract it from 2,255, we get that Jacobs mummies is 3,520 years old… That would be in the western calendar of today, about 1,505 BC, as the time of death of Jacob..
The reason to find the closest date of the age of Jacob’s mummy is to see what kind of procedure was used in Egypt to embalm the bodies. Also to see how Egyptian mummies of about the same age as Jacob’s looked today.

We used as references of methods of mummification in Egypt during the New Kingdom from 1550-1070 BC and the pictures from the book that we acquired at the mummies exhibition.
The method of mummification in Egypt included trans-nasal brain removal with pouring of resin in the nose into the brain besides applying it to the skin. All thoracic organs were removed except the heart that was left in place many times wrapped with linen… After the removal of the internal organs, body cavities were cleansed with wine and water and then stuffed with natron ( a combination of baking soda and salt), resin (myrrh & cassia) and linen. The organs were dried, embalmed and wrapped in linen and placed in canopic jars. The lids were decorated with the four heads of the sons of Horus: Ameset with a human head, Hapi with a baboon head, Duamutef with a jackal head and Qebehsenuef with a falcon head.
After the cleansing and drying phases, which started four days after death and lasted about 48 days and the adornment of the outer appearance, the mummy was wrapped from head to foot. And gum instead of glue was used to smear the wrapping cut linen. They made a wooden coffin made in the shape of man. The body was then placed in the coffin and in some cases then covered with a layer of resin. Embalming and wrapping took about 14 days, while SEVENTY DAYS WERE IDEALLY NEEDED FOR THE ENTIRE PROCESS.
Genesis 50:3 tells us that Jacob was embalmed in 70 days!!!
Now the second Patriarch that The Torah tell us that he is embalmed is Joseph the son of Jacob, who lived 110 years during the time of the New Kingdom of Egypt.
Genesis Chapter 50
26. So Joseph died, being a hundred and ten years old; and they embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt.
Joseph would be contemporaneous to his father’s mummification in the year 1505 BC in the method used by the Egyptians to preserve his body would be the same as in the New Kingdom’s period from 1550 to 1070 BC.
Joseph was considered royalty in Egypt during his time, as he was the right hand of Pharaoh after interpreting dreams that led to the saving from hunger of the world of the Year 1515 BC. So the same methods used to embalmed the kings would be the one used to embalm Joseph and his father at their death time. The preparation of the mummy depended on social status and monetary resources.
Why Would Joseph’s body need to be preserved?
Well many of us would think that the Egyptian culture had an influence on Joseph, but also that he had the revelation from YHVH that they would be in Egypt as aliens for another 400 years, and when the time came for the Israelites to return to the Promised Land, then Joseph’s death body would need preservation for at least 400 years.
But did our Heavenly Father also have another purpose for the preservation of Joseph’s body even until today and beyond?
Well, the Tanakh (also known as the Old Testament) tells us exactly where both patriarchs are entombed, so we could respect them, but one more time, Did God had also another ulterior reason?
1) Jacob is buried in Machpelah, Hebron Israel.
Genesis Chapter 50

13. For his sons carried him to the land of Canaan, and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah, which Abraham bought with the field for a possessionof a burying place of Ephron the Hittite, before Mamre.
14. And Joseph returned to Egypt, he, and his brothers, and all who went up with him to bury his father, after he had buried his father.
2) Yoseph buried at Shechem (now Nablus), Israel.

19. And Moses took the bones of Joseph with him; for he had solemnly sworn the people of Israel, saying, God will surely visit you; and you shall carry up my bones from here with you.
Joshua Chapter 24
32. And the bones of Joseph, which the people of Israel brought out of Egypt, buried they in Shechem, in a parcel of ground which Jacob bought from the sons of Hamor the father of Shechem for a hundred pieces of silver; and it became the inheritance of the sons of Joseph.
What is the condition today of the mummies that are contemporaneous to these two Patriarch’s? Let’s take a look at a selection of Mummies from the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. Remember Jacob died on 1505 BC and Joseph in the 1400’s BC
King Seqenenre Tao II died 1555 BC… Perfect preservation of teeth! one of the places where we can obtain DNA sampling, from the pulp inside a tooth.
King Seti 1, front view and profile, died c. 1280 BC… Incredible preservation!
DNA and mummies:
More research has been done in the mitochondrial DNA of mummies than on the Y-chromosome DNA of mummies simply because there are many more copies on the organelle mitochondria in the cytoplasm of one cell, whereas there is only 1 copy of the Y-chromosome in the nucleus of the cell, many more copies of mitochondrial DNA increases the possibility of its preservation after death. But scientist tells us that it is almost impossible to try to obtain ancient DNA from objects older than a few HUNDRED THOUSAND YEARS OLD. Jacob and his son Joseph are only less than 4,000 years old!!!!
We also are not interested in mitochondrial DNA as it is transmitted from woman to progeny and the 12 founders of the 12 tribes of Israel are men. It is the Y-chromosome nuclear DNA that is transmitted from father to son to son unchanged for a period of about 3,000-5,000 years according to geneticists that will help us identify biologically the elusive Israel’s tribes.
Here follows an account on how a laboratory in Mainz Germany obtains ancient DNA from a mummy.
“Special precautionary measures have to be taken in the highly sensitive aDNA (ancient DNA) laboratory data in order to prevent foreign molecules and modern DNA being brought into the laboratory. Staff members are therefore, required to have taken a shower in the morning and wear freshly washed cloths. As well as then putting on protective clothing. This is intended to prevent the possibility of molecules still adhering to clothing from the previous day or else their own DNA being brought into the laboratory. A sample is taking from the mummy in advanced. This is usually done by cutting out a piece of bone from a place that will not be visible later. (Another way is by drilling a small whole in a tooth or long bone of the mummy and aspirating pulp or bone marrow that contains DNA of that specific person). This sample is then taken to the clean laboratory where mechanical and chemical processing is used to obtain the DNA from the bone or tissue. This enables the small amounts of DNA in bones to be secured while ensuring the purity of the DNA. The DNA obtained is now replicated by means of a chemical process involving the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). This enables several million molecules to be produced from the small number of molecules available in a short period of time, and these molecules are then rendered readable by means of a further biochemical reaction, known as DNA sequencing.”
It may be that there was an ulterior purpose of preserving the physical body of Jacob and Joseph until now… It was just waiting that technology will develop to a point as to allow the DNA testing of these embalmed patriarchs, so the 12 tribes of Israel could be identify at such a time as this. So are you on the petition to request the authorities of Israel to allow us to obtain DNA from Jacob and Joseph to determine their Y-chromosome haplogroup? The 12 tribes of Israel will be identified. Ezekiel 47-48, Revelations 7 & 14
May the Lord give us strength to pursue His purposes with all that He has given us… That fear of the giants in the Land will not mislead us stopping us, that the desire to see the Word of God fulfilled will burn greater in our bones than the fright of man.

Deuteronomy Chapter 31

6. Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, he goes with you; he will not fail you, nor forsake you.
