Cohen, The Priest – July 2016.

Cohen, The Priest – July 2016.

We had a great time at the First International Genomics Conference in Haifa Israel July 10-14. Dr. Gad Rennet did an outstanding job in the coordination of the speakers, the comfort of the attendees and the lectures that he himself shared with us.

Haifa Israel, July 10-14, 2016

Two points of interest came to our mind and we share one of them with you.

First is the question of the Cohen, the descendant of Aaron: In 2016 can we determine by DNA who is a Cohen according to genetic markers in the Y-Haplogroup?

Geneticists talk about the Cohen gene, or in 2016 is a Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP)  or now called by some, Variant (SNV) ; genetic marker which is called P58 found over 50% of the Cohen (Priest Rabbis)  in the Y-haplogroup “J1” ( , but as we look for the Cohen among the Jews we also find families that for hundreds of years that had rabbis in their genealogy and they are Y-haplogroup R1a, E1b, J2, and R1b among others, and at the beginning (like in  2004) for the search of the “Cohen” genetic marker, we found these combination of 6 short tandem repeats (that later became 12…) among the above mentioned five haplogroups: J1, J2, E1b, R1a, R1b…

Bennett Greenspan, CEO of Family Tree DNA Laboratories in Houston, Texas tells us:

“All men descend from a common man.

Every man in the planet can be placed on one of these branches of the tree.

Because these branches take a long time to develop, there is quite a bit of geographic specificity associated with the various branches.

E= North Africa

G= Caucasus

I= SE Europe

J=Fertile Crescent & Saudi Peninsula

Q= Central Asia

R= Turkey to Kardistan and Europe

T=Lebanon and Fertile Crescent.”

There are over 20 main Y-chromosome haplogroups and the 7 depicted here by Greenspan within their area in the world of Origen, is just to explain the 7 most common Y-chromosome among the Jews in 2016, after their rendezvous during the Diaspora with these communities.

Bennett, still at the July 2016 genomics conference in Israel, reports the same 7-8 Y-chromosome haplogroups found among the Jews today, among the Sephardim and the Ashkenazi… But geneticists insisted that the Israeli Cohen could belong to only ONE Y-chromosome haplogroup, so how can they explain the other four haplogroups? And which haplogroup was really the Cohen, physical descendant of Aaron?

Y Haplogroup Jews 2014

During the Genomic Conference in Haifa, Israel, on July 11, 2016 Dr. Doron Behar speaks to us about the study of Paternal Lineages among Jews… Specifically about the Ashkenasis Levites R1a of 504 whole y-chromosomes, and compares these to other Jews non-Levites, and other R1a non-Ashkenazi’s Jews… Interesting dissertation but it does not help us much with the identification of the Levite physical descendants of Jacob, since, within many other groups from different areas of the world, once they became Jews, significant numbers of these took the coveted Levite Cohen positions…After 4-6 generations no one remembers from where they came from, especially so, during the time of intense persecution of the Jews.

How do we know that The R1a did not come from the conversion of the Persians to Judaism and have forgotten now after over 2,400 years… and will meet every single criterion in Dr. Behar’s summary:

1) Levantine Origen

2) One star signal of expansion -1450 ybp

3) Arrival to Europe with the Ashkenazy Jewish ancestors

4) One of the few original Jewish ancestors.

5) Likely not prevalent among the Hebrews.

6) Repeated introgression into Non-Ashkenazi Levites.

7) Introgression might be related to the Leviticus Status.

8) Location of obtaining the Levite Status to be resolved.

Including the R1a men bodily appearance may have changed, but they still might not be physical descendants of Jacob!  So many unknowns that could be so simply answered.

Esther Chapter 8

17. And in every province, and in every city, wherever the king’s command and

his decree came, the Jews had joy and gladness, a feast and a good day. And

many of the people of the land became Jews; for the fear of the Jews fell upon

Genetic drift came into play as they searched for answers but not real logic based on facts has been found. This is not surprising as we find that the country places of origin of four groups called Cohen are different:

1) Melchizedeck the Cohen of the Most High…Place of origin??? Jerusalem before Abraham?

2) Joseph’s wife is the daughter of an Egyptian Cohen

3) The father in law of Moses Jethro is a Midian Cohen(today Saudi Arabia)

4) Aaron descendants are Israelite Cohen.

Even if we say that the Midian Cohen (Saudi Arabia 2016) and the Israel Cohen should have the same Y-Haplogroup as male descendants of Abraham, and hoping that there were no mutations between these two male descendants and their ancestor Abraham, we still have two different Cohen: the Egyptian Cohen grandfather of Ephraim and Manasseh; and then we have Melchizedek, the Cohen in Jerusalem but that existed before Abraham.

Lets’ see:

1) When we start reading the Torah, it is in the first book or Genesis in which for the first time we see the word Cohen, priest, and it is referring to Melchizedek, the Cohen or priest of the Most High as he encounters Abraham:

Genesis Chapter 14

18. And Melchizedek king of Shalem brought forth bread and wine; and he was

the priest of the Most High God.

2) We find that Yoseph, the son of Jacob marries the daughter of an Egyptian Cohen:

Genesis Chapter 46

20. And to Joseph in the land of Egypt were born Manasseh and Ephraim, whom

Asenath the daughter of Poti-Pherah priest of On bore to him.

3) We then find Jethro of Midian (Saudi Arabia today), the father in-law of Moses, which is also a Cohen priest:

Exodus Chapter 3

1. And Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian; and he led the flock far away into the desert, and came to the mountain of God, to Horeb.

4) Finally we have Aaron of the Tribe of Levi and his descendants as Cohen of Israel unto HaShem.

Exodus Chapter 28

1. And take to you Aaron your brother, and his sons with him, from among the

people of Israel, that he may minister to me in the priest’s office, Aaron, Nadab

and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar, Aaron’s sons.

Now in Israel, as in the other kingdoms, to be a Cohen was a prestigious position, a financial good standing, to be a Cohen within a community was something to be desired…

Numbers Chapter 5

9. And every offering of all the holy things of the people of Israel, which they

bring to the priest, shall be his.

May I just say that the maternal grandfather of the sons of Moses was a  Midianite (Saudi Arabia) Cohen or priest, Jethro… That the J1 is the most common Y-haplogroup among the Arabs, the Midianites, including Mohamed  and it is also the most common among the Cohen, priest rabbis Jews in the World… Well, is there a connection between the Cohen Midianite Jethro, the maternal grandfather of the Levites descendants of Moses and the Arabs, being J1, and the majority of the Cohen Israelites in 2016 being J1, P58?

May I also point out that the maternal grandfather of Ephraim and Manasseh was an Egyptian Cohen, probably belonging to the y-haplogroup E, according to the geneticists, and the only Samaritan Cohen priest, that lived in Israel constantly and never left the land no matter what, today has the Y-chromosome E1b ( …Is there a connection there?

Remember we all have 4 grandfathers and genes from all of them…

Even if the Torah is explicit that only the descendants of Aaron will be priests unto HaShem, the other Levites, even Moses and his son Gershon could not be Israeli Cohen, priest unto HaShem, for the other Levites will serve the priests, the Cohen, Aaron and his descendants…

Exodus Chapter 28

1. And take to you Aaron your brother, and his sons with him, from among the

people of Israel, that he may minister to me in the priest’s office, Aaron, Nadab

and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar, Aaron’s sons.

Numbers Chapter 3

9. And you shall give the Levites to Aaron and to his sons; they are wholly given

to him out of the people of Israel.

10. And you shall appoint Aaron and his sons, and they shall keep their priest’s

office; and the stranger who comes near shall be put to death.

So we see that our disobedience leads other men besides the descendants of Aaron to become Cohen in Israel, for example we see that Micah even though he is from the tribe of Ephraim, he consecrates as a Cohen one of his own sons”

Judges Chapter 17

1. And there was a man of Mount Ephraim, whose name was Micah.

5. And the man Micah had a house of gods, and made an ephod, and family

idols, and consecrated one of his sons, who became his priest.

We see later on that Micah consecrates a Levite as a priest to him…Not all Levites could be priests, as Moses was a Levite and he or his descendants were no priests, it was only the descendants of the Levite Aaron that could be Cohen…

12. And Micah consecrated the Levite; and the young man became his priest,

and was in the house of Micah.

We read in Judges that after Micah consecrated his own priest, and became idolatrous, the Tribe of Dan on their way to their new found place, Laish, in the North of Israel, take Mica’s priests and idols and we see how idolatry leads the tribe of Dan even before the division of Israel under King Salomon into North and South Kingdoms.

Judges Chapter 18

26. And the sons of Dan went their way; and when Micah saw that they were

too strong for him, he turned and went back to his house.

27. And they took the things which Micah had made, and the priest which he

had, and came to Laish, to a people who were quiet and unsuspecting; and they

struck them with the edge of the sword, and burned the city with fire.

28. And there was no savior, because it was far from Sidon, and they had no

dealings with any man; and it was in the valley that lies by Beth-Rehob. And

they built a city, and lived there.

29. And they called the name of the city Dan, after the name of Dan their father,

who was born to Israel; but the name of the city was Laish at the first.

30. And the sons of Dan set up the engraved image; and Jonathan, the son of

Gershom, the son of Manasseh, he and his sons were priests to the tribe of Dan

until the day of the exile of the land.

31. And they set up for themselves Micah’s engraved image, which he had

made, all the time that the house of God was in Shiloh.

Altar of idolatry worship of the tribe of Dan…Tel-Dan, Israel July 2016–07

If you have the chance to visit Tel-Dan, it is one of the most beautiful places to see… they even call the section where all the springs of water are born, Paradise.

Conclusion: We cannot at the present time do the Y-chromosome DNA of a Cohen and claim that he is physical descendant from Aaron… We could do it in a short time if we could test the DNA of the mummies of Jacob and Joseph…But as the Prime Minister of Israel just answered negatively our requisition letter with signatures of representatives of 34 countries requesting the DNA testing to be done, we cannot know the results from that route.

A member of Etz Yoseph suggested, DNA testing in Egypt of the Israelites bones, while they lived in Goshen, in the Nile Delta, before the Exodus…These Israelites would have not mixed as much with the native Egyptian population, as the Israelites were shepherd and cattle keepers and the Egyptians detested the raising of animals, considering it below them….But, where is Goshen today? There is a documental from 2 years ago where Prime Minister Netanyahu and Israel President Shimon Perez appeared, called “Patterns of Evidence”. In it, it is suggested that a place called “Avaris”, in the Eastern Delta of the Nile River, is the ancient place where the Israelites lived in Egypt before the Exodus…This is before the multitude of the Exodus joined the Israelites, before the Persians in Esther joined them, before the dispersion of the Israelites brought into the picture more gentile conversions to Judaism but a more complicated one to identify the physical descendants of the 12 tribes of Israel… We could have a clearer picture of the Y-chromosome of Jacob if we could have access to the bones of the earlier habitants of Goshen…

Can you help us get to the DNA of those bones in Egypt?

Thank you for your time. We would appreciate it if you share your thoughts with us…

Bird hiding from the sun at Ashkelon National park, Israel.

Up to now, in trying to find the 12 tribes of Israel we went from the present to the past testing the Y-chromosome DNA of living Jews.… We should try doing the DNA test,  going  from the past to the present, as  we have the technology to do it, and as we do not know the environmental conditions that may have cause changes in the DNA of Israel…

We are hoping that you can help…
